I’m addicted to sugar – Help!

There I’ve said it, I’m addicted to sugar, well puddings to be precise. I don’t drink, smoke, or take drugs so I suppose as vices go, a cake isn’t that bad. But here’s the thing I have a pudding after every evening meal, and I don’t mean a yoghurt or an apple but an actual pudding.

We are told that our behaviours are learned, so sorry mum, this one is down to you. As a child of the 70’s and a teen of the 80’s our palates were relatively bland when compared to today. (Yes, I’m that old.) I don’t ever remember having a takeaway and my mum’s idea of fast food was a banana. In the summer school holidays as a very special treat we would sometimes go to Wimpy (Google it), and I would always pass on the burger and head straight for the knickerbocker glory.

Back then, at school everyone had a school dinner, I don’t ever remember anyone bringing a pack lunch and oh what fabulous dinners they were. School dinners suffer an unfair reputation for being dreadful, when the reality was, they were brilliant. Home cooked, hot food, my favourite being liver and bacon, with mash and cabbage covered in oodles of onion gravy, followed by a small roll of vanilla ice cream, served on a bed of hot chocolate custard. Just thinking of it makes me feel all warm inside. This would then be followed by a full evening meal.  Every night my family would all sit together around the dining room table to share a meal, usually meat and two veg. This was followed by another glorious pudding – Jam Roly Poly and custard, Apple Pie, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Spotted Dick, Bread and Butter pudding, the list is endless. I am the person, when going out for a meal, that will always choose pudding over a starter and if time and money dictate, I will forgo the main and always choose the pudding.

Now I find myself on wrong side of 50 and coming to term with my sugar addition. Whilst I’m currently in good health and active I might not always be, so maybe it’s time I get some help.

So, what do I do?

If you are like me and need some help to improve what you eat, maybe the portion size or need some tips on tackling a sugar addition our nutritionists in the adult weight management team are a great place to start.

Why not give them a call, what have you got to lose except a few pounds.

Absolutely fabulous, brilliant delivery of all information interesting and enlightening. I have learnt so much about myself, my eating habits have completely changed. I feel better, I am able to walk for enjoyment and lifestyle. My skin is brighter and i don't feel sluggish anymore.
